The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the discoveries have been important for chemists developing ways to produce specific forms of molecules, including medicines, where the two mirror-image forms can have very different effects.

In fact only one of the mirror-image forms may have the desired effect, and the other form may be harmful.
